Timing Belt vs. Serpentine Belt — What's the Difference?
These two belts get confused constantly, and they fail very differently. The timing belt is inside the engine, synchronizes the crankshaft and camshaft, and is not visible without disassembly — if it breaks on an interference engine, it can cause serious internal engine damage. The serpentine belt is on the outside of the engine, visible when you open the hood, and drives external accessories: the alternator, A/C compressor, and — relevant to this page — the power steering pump on hydraulic systems. A worn or broken serpentine belt causes hard steering, a dead battery, or A/C failure, but won't cause the internal engine damage a timing belt failure can.
