⚡ Servicing your Tesla at an independent shop does not void your vehicle warranty — protected under Canadian consumer protection law.
Not every Tesla with a sensor complaint has the same hardware. Model 3 and Model Y built before October 2022, and Model S/X built before early 2023, use ultrasonic parking sensors (USS), physical sensors embedded in the bumpers. Newer vehicles use Tesla Vision, a camera-only system with no physical parking sensors at all. Diagnosing a parking or sensor complaint correctly starts with knowing which system your specific car actually has.
Does Your Tesla Even Have Physical Parking Sensors?
Model 3 & Model Y
Built before early October 2022: has 12 ultrasonic sensors (6 front, 6 rear). Built after: Tesla Vision only, no physical sensors.
Model S & Model X
Built before early 2023: ultrasonic sensors. Built after: Tesla Vision only.
Check for yourself
Look at your front and rear bumpers for small circular sensor pods. If you can see them, your car has USS.
If your Tesla is Tesla Vision-only, a "Park Assist Unavailable" complaint isn't a sensor failure at all, there's no sensor to fail. It's a camera or software limitation, and belongs on our camera diagnosis page instead.
Diagnosing a Ultrasonic Sensor Fault
On vehicles that do have USS, a single failed sensor disables the entire Park Assist system with a generic-sounding error, not a specific "sensor 3 failed" message. We use the vehicle's built-in Service Mode to view live sensor status and pinpoint exactly which of the 12 sensors is at fault before ordering any part, since inner and outer sensors use different part numbers and are not interchangeable.
General Fault Code Diagnostic Process
Beyond parking sensors, Tesla's touchscreen surfaces fault messages for dozens of systems, some urgent, many not. Our process: read the actual fault code and history through Service Mode rather than reacting to the on-screen wording alone, check whether it's a known software-related message versus a genuine hardware fault, and confirm the fix before ordering parts.
Safe to drive? A parking sensor fault alone does not affect drivability, you simply lose parking assistance and must rely on mirrors and cameras in tight spaces. Other fault categories vary, we'll tell you plainly if a specific fault is urgent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my Tesla have physical parking sensors?
Model 3 and Model Y built before early October 2022, and Model S/X built before early 2023, have 12 ultrasonic sensors visible as small circular pods in the bumpers. Newer vehicles use Tesla Vision (camera-only) with no physical parking sensors.
Is it safe to drive with a parking sensor fault?
Yes. A parking sensor fault disables Park Assist but does not affect the vehicle's drivability, you'll need to rely on mirrors and cameras when maneuvering in tight spaces.
Why does my newer Tesla not have Park Assist at all?
Tesla removed physical ultrasonic sensors from new production starting in late 2022 (Model 3/Y) and early 2023 (S/X), moving to camera-only Tesla Vision. Some parking-distance features have been restored via software updates over time, but availability varies by software version and configuration.
Can a single bad sensor disable my whole parking system?
Yes, on vehicles with USS, one failed sensor typically disables Park Assist entirely rather than just that one zone, which is why pinpointing the exact failed sensor via Service Mode matters before ordering parts.
Do you diagnose fault codes beyond parking sensors?
Yes, we use Service Mode to read actual fault history across vehicle systems rather than reacting to on-screen wording alone, so you get an accurate diagnosis before any repair.
Accurate Diagnosis Before Any Repair
Radman reads actual Tesla fault codes and sensor status through Service Mode, confirming what's really wrong, and what your specific model year's hardware actually supports, before recommending any repair.
