TESLA DRIVE UNIT MOUNT BUSHING SPECIALISTS
Tesla Drive Unit Bushing Replacement
A clunk specifically when engaging Drive or Reverse, or on the very first pull-away, often points to a worn drive unit mount, not the drive unit itself.

Drive unit mount bushings are a different component entirely from the suspension bushings (control arm, sway bar) covered on our suspension noise pages. These bushings secure the motor and gearbox assembly itself to the chassis, and when they wear out, the drive unit is free to shift slightly under torque, producing a distinct clunk right at the moment power is applied.
Drive Unit Mount Bushing vs. Suspension Bushing
Not the same part: control arm and sway bar bushings (covered on our squeak & creak page) affect how the wheel and suspension move. Drive unit mount bushings hold the motor/gearbox assembly to the chassis. Both can produce a clunk, but the trigger is different, and so is the fix.
Signs of Worn Drive Unit Bushings
A clunk specifically when shifting into Drive or Reverse, or right at initial pull-away from a stop
A clunk that happens in both drive directions, not just one
No fluid visible under the drive unit, Tesla drive units are sealed, so visible leakage points to a different, more serious problem, not the mounts
No continuous whine or hum during driving, that pattern points toward internal bearing wear rather than a mount issue
Why This Matters: Mount vs. Internal Failure
This distinction is the difference between a moderate repair and a very expensive one. Worn mount bushings are a bolt-on fix, the drive unit itself comes off the subframe, the worn bushings are pressed out and replaced, and the unit goes back in. Internal bearing or gear failure inside the drive unit is a different scope entirely and typically requires a remanufactured or replacement drive unit. Real-world example: owners have documented saving thousands of dollars by correctly diagnosing a mount bushing issue rather than accepting a full drive unit replacement quote.
How We Diagnose It
Road test in both drive directions to confirm the clunk pattern, visual inspection under the vehicle for any fluid seepage (a red flag for internal issues, not mounts), and physical inspection of the mount bushings themselves with the vehicle raised, checking for visible cracking, separation, or excess play.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a drive unit bushing and a suspension bushing?
Suspension bushings (control arm, sway bar) affect wheel and suspension movement and produce noise related to bumps or steering. Drive unit mount bushings secure the motor/gearbox to the chassis and produce a clunk specifically tied to shifting into gear or initial pull-away.
Is a clunk on Drive/Reverse engagement always the drive unit itself?
Not necessarily — it can indicate a worn mount bushing rather than an internal drive unit fault. This distinction matters significantly for repair cost, so proper diagnosis before replacement is worth it.
Can drive unit bushings be replaced without replacing the whole drive unit?
Yes, when the issue is confirmed to be the mount bushings rather than internal bearing or gear wear, the drive unit is removed, the bushings are pressed out and replaced, and the unit is reinstalled — a fraction of the cost of a full drive unit replacement.
How do I know if it's a mount issue vs. internal drive unit failure?
Fluid seepage under the drive unit, a continuous whine or hum while driving, or clunking that's accompanied by reduced acceleration all point toward internal issues rather than mounts. We diagnose this with a road test and physical inspection before quoting a repair.
Confirm the Cause Before Committing to a Drive Unit Replacement
Radman diagnoses drive unit clunk complaints properly — mount bushing versus internal fault — because the cost difference between the two repairs is significant.
