⚡ Servicing your Tesla at an independent shop does not void your vehicle warranty — protected under Canadian consumer protection law.

Because Teslas don't need oil changes for an engine, many owners assume there's no scheduled oil service at all. That's not quite right, the single-speed gearbox inside each drive unit runs on its own gear oil, and Tesla specifies a service interval for it, separate from anything related to the battery or motor itself.

Tesla's Recommended Drive Unit Service Interval

Every 25,000 Miles

Drivetrain gear oil and filter change on Model 3 and Model Y, with oil pump bolts inspected and torqued to spec.

Every 50,000 Miles

Full drivetrain inspection: bearing play check, output shaft seal condition, and inverter cooling circuit integrity.

Correct Fluid Matters

Tesla's spec has changed over model years, using the wrong fluid can affect gearbox protection and NVH (noise/vibration).

Why This Isn't a Simple Drain-and-Fill

Unlike a conventional oil change, Tesla's own service procedure for the drive unit does not use a simple drain plug. The oil pump itself has to be removed (2 bolts) along with the oil filter to properly drain the unit, then refilled to a specific volume and torqued to spec on reinstall. Rear drive units on Model 3/Y take roughly 2.1 litres minimum (Tesla recommends slightly more to ensure the pump draws no air); front drive units take roughly 1.3 litres. Getting the fill volume and torque specs wrong on the oil pump bolts is a real risk with this service if it's not done to Tesla's actual procedure.

Why This Service Matters

Tesla's own service bulletins have documented rear drive units built with inadequate grease from the factory in some vehicles, leading to a clunk on accelerator pedal transitions or a hum at highway speed, and premature wear if left unaddressed. Staying on the recommended oil and filter interval is a straightforward way to protect against exactly this kind of premature drivetrain wear, well before it turns into the drive unit bushing or internal bearing issues covered on our other drivetrain pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Teslas need an oil change?

Not for an engine, there isn't one, but the single-speed gearbox inside each drive unit runs on its own gear oil, which Tesla specifies changing on a scheduled interval, separate from anything related to the battery.

How often does the Tesla drive unit need an oil change?

Tesla's guidance calls for a drivetrain oil and filter change roughly every 25,000 miles on Model 3 and Model Y, with a fuller drivetrain inspection at 50,000 miles.

Is drive unit oil service a simple drain-and-fill?

No. Tesla's actual service procedure requires removing the oil pump and filter to drain the unit rather than using a simple drain plug, then refilling to a specific volume and torquing the pump bolts to spec on reinstall.

Can skipping this service cause the clunk or hum I've heard about?

Tesla has documented rear drive units built with inadequate grease from the factory leading to exactly this kind of clunk or hum, and staying current on the oil service interval is a straightforward way to protect against comparable wear over time.

How much does drive unit oil service cost?

Cost depends on whether it's a front, rear, or dual drive unit service. Call (416) 742-4521 for a quote specific to your vehicle.
