Acura CL Cooling Fan Isn’t Turning Off – Let’s Test and Fix
If the cooling fan switch is permanently stuck, this is common on the 2001. This can lead to various problems, including battery drain. I’ll share my experience with this and you how to test and replace the cause. I’ll also refer to relevant OBD codes.
The Problem
In mine, I noticed that the cooling fan wouldn’t shut off, even after the engine was turned off. This led to the battery being drained repeatedly. Initially puzzled, but soon realized this was a common issue with this model.

- Locate the relay: It’s in the fuse box under the hood.
- Test the relay: Swap it with another similar relay.
Inspect the Fan Switch
- Location: It’s typically near the thermostat.

Test the Cooling Motor
- Direct power: Apply direct power to the motor. If it doesn’t work, the motor is the issue.
The Thermostat
- A faulty thermostat can cause the fan to run continuously.
Inspect Wiring and Connectors
- Look for damage: Check for any damaged wires or loose connections.
Check the Engine Temperature Sensor
- Sensor location: Find it near the thermostat housing.
- Testing: Use a multimeter to test its resistance.
Replacing the Fan Switch
- Wrench set

Steps
- Disconnect the Battery: Safety first. Disconnect the negative terminal.
- Locate the Fan Switch: It’s usually near the radiator.
- Remove the Old Switch: Unscrew and gently remove it.
- Install the New Switch: Install the same as the old switch.
- Reconnect the Battery: Reattach the negative terminal.
