Alpina
Alpina has a reputation for exclusive and high-performance cars, often based on BMW models. Founded in 1965 by Burkard Bovensiepen in Buchloe, Germany, Alpina started as a small operation, initially developing a dual-carburetor setup for the BMW 1500. This created the foundation for their future in automotive tuning and engineering.
Throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, Alpina continued to gain recognition by modifying BMWs engines, suspension, and distinctive styling. Unlike typical aftermarket tuners, Alpina established a close relationship with BMW, allowing it to build its versions of BMW models with full warranty coverage, a rare occurrence in the industry.
In the 1980s, their reputation was cemented for luxury and high performance with models like the B7 Turbo. These BMW sedans were furnished with significantly boosted performance, like turbocharged engines and customized interiors. Alpina competed successfully in touring car racing with modified BMWs.
Alpina Growth
The 1990s and 2000s brought about an expanded range of BMW models. Each one was highlighted by a balance of luxury, bespoke design, and improved performance. Notable models from this era include the B10 Bi-Turbo and the B7, which have the feel of a luxury sedan with sports car-like performance.
In recent years, Alpina has continued to refine their products, focusing on producing small numbers of highly special cars. The models, such as the B3 and XD3, offer more luxurious alternatives to BMW’s own M models.
Although independent, its deep integration with BMW’s production makes it a unique car company within a car company. This partner approach is a very rare occurrence in the industry. Implicitly, it seems that they’re fundamentals and standards are aligned with BMW.
