Your 2002-2006 Acura RSX has a Common Oil Leak; We Know

Acura RSX oil leak leaks from pressure sensor Like some of you, I’ve experienced the common issue of an oil leak in my 2002-2006 Acura RSX. After some research and hands-on experience, I now understand oils leaks with this car, and want to share how to diagnose and fix this one.  In my example, and likely cause, is the oil pressure sensor.

Troubleshoot the engine light. Oil change steps.

Check for recalls.

What is the Oil Pressure Sensor

It is also known as an oil pressure switch or sender. When working correctly, and not leaking, it monitors the oil pressure in your engine. Over time, with regular wear, it may start to leak. Why? Because the sensor’s seals can degrade, hence the leak.

Diagnose

  1. Look: Focus on the area around the oil pressure sensor. It’s usually located near the oil filter.  This placement allows it to accurately measure the oil pressure coming directly from the oil pump. Depending on the specific model (base or Type-S), you may find it accessible from the top or you might need to access it from underneath the vehicle. It’s usually more visible and accessible once the oil filter is removed.  Clean the area around the oil pressure sensor to make it easier to spot the leak.
  2. Start the Engine: With the area clean, start your engine and let it run for a few minutes and check again.

OBD Codes

Although it’s not likely that you will see an engine light or any codes, it is possible to see the following associated ones:

  • P0171: System Too Lean
  • P0300: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
  • P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold

See all the OBD codes here.

Fixing the Leak in Your Acura RSX

  1. Tools: wrench
  2. Replace: Carefully unscrew the old sensor with the wrench.  Screw in the new sensor. Make sure it’s tight to prevent future leaks.

Final Thoughts

Dealing with an oil leak in your RSX can be frustrating, but with the right knowledge, comes power!  Some common problems are easily resolved, and this is one of them.  I hope this helped.  Safe driving!
