How Urgent Is Your Symptom?

Why Guessing at Parts Wastes Money

Brake squeal alone can have at least five different causes, each needing a different fix: surface rust that's clearing on its own (needs nothing — new pads won't stop it recurring), glazed pads (needs resurfacing or replacement), corroded hardware (needs cleaning and lubrication — new pads on the same corroded hardware will squeal again), a rotor rust lip (needs resurfacing or replacement), or incorrect lubrication from a prior service (needs correction, not new parts).

Five causes, five different repairs, one symptom. Telling a shop "just replace the pads" is the right call for one of these five scenarios and wasted money for the other four — which is why we inspect before quoting.

How We Diagnose a Tesla Brake Problem

1. Listen First — What you're experiencing, when it started, and what triggers it shapes our diagnostic priority before the car is even on the lift.
2. Diagnostic Road Test — We reproduce the symptom under the conditions you described, often narrowing the cause before disassembly begins.
3. All-Corner Inspection — Every wheel comes off; pads, rotors, calipers, slider pins, hardware, and hub surfaces are checked at every corner.
4. Measure, Don't Estimate — Rotor thickness, runout, and brake fluid moisture are measured with instruments, not guessed by eye.
5. Explain Findings — What's causing your symptom and what the options are, including what can be serviced versus what needs replacing.
6. Repair & Road Test — After the approved repair, we road test again to confirm the original symptom is actually resolved before you pick up the car.

"My Brakes Were Serviced but the Noise Came Back"

This usually means one of three things: the wrong component was addressed originally (new pads on a rotor rust lip won't fix a rotor rust lip), a step was skipped during the prior service (slider pins not removed, mating surfaces not cleaned — leaving the original corrosion to keep progressing), or a genuinely new problem developed since, particularly after another Ontario winter. We start fresh in every case rather than assuming the previous diagnosis was right or wrong — bring any documentation from the earlier service to help focus the inspection.

What Parts Go On During a Repair

High Carbon Rotors — Suited to Tesla's weight and heat demands, improving dissipation and resisting thermal cracking.
OE-Spec or Better Pads — Selected for pedal feel consistency across Tesla's blended braking system, not the cheapest option.
New Hardware Kits — Clips and shims replaced fresh, not reused corroded originals — one of the most common causes of post-repair squeal.
Correct Lubricants Only — Applied to the correct points only; wrong product or friction-surface contamination causes noise.
Caliper Replacement When Needed — A seized piston or corroded body gets replaced with a quality unit, not forced free.
Nothing Unnecessary — A component that measures within spec doesn't get replaced just because it was accessed during the repair.

What We See Most, By Model

Model 3 — Front slider pin seizure causing pulling and uneven wear, rear EPB corrosion freezing in winter, and spring grinding after rear brakes sat unused all winter.
Model Y — The crossover body traps more salt around rear brakes than the Model 3 sedan; rear EPB and corrosion concerns are proportionally more common.
Model S — Older GTA vehicles have accumulated significant age and mileage; hardware corrosion is often further along, and performance variants need specific parts.
Model X — Tesla's heaviest production vehicle; rotors that have corroded from low use are asked to handle heavier stops, making rotor replacement proportionally more common.

Brakes or Suspension? How to Tell

One of the most common questions we field is whether a noise is coming from the brakes or the suspension. Brake-related noise typically only happens when braking and disappears otherwise, presents as squeal/grind/scrape specifically during deceleration, and creates pull or pulsation tied to brake application. Suspension or wheel bearing noise persists while driving regardless of braking, shows up as hum/drone/growl/clunk at speed, changes pitch with steering angle (a classic bearing sign), and often clunks specifically over bumps. When symptoms overlap — a seized caliper dragging can sound like a bearing hum, for instance — we inspect both systems rather than assuming the obvious candidate.

Preventing the Same Repair Next Year

Most Tesla brake repairs in Ontario trace back to a missed or incomplete maintenance service. Once a repair is done: schedule annual brake service (slider pins, mating surfaces, hardware, EPB check) each spring after winter; apply the brakes with moderate firmness a few times weekly in winter rather than relying purely on regen, to keep surfaces cleaner; test brake fluid on Tesla's recommended two-year schedule; mention any new symptom promptly rather than waiting for it to worsen; and keep your service records for resale and future reference.

Can Tesla brake vibration be repaired?

Yes. The correct repair depends on whether the cause is rotor condition, hub cleanliness, pad transfer, seized hardware, tires, or another braking concern — diagnosis determines which.

Why are my Tesla brakes rusty?

Regenerative braking reduces mechanical brake use, so rotors and hardware may not self-clean as often as on a conventional vehicle, especially with Ontario road salt and moisture.

Should I replace Tesla brakes or service them?
