ToggleTesla Clunking Noise Over Bumps
A clunk over bumps, speed bumps, or potholes is a specific suspension signal — different from a bearing hum or a ball joint squeak. We isolate the impact-load components: sway bar links, strut top mounts, control arm bushings, and mounting hardware.

Suspension noises have different characters, and each points to a different set of components. A continuous drone that rises with vehicle speed is almost always a wheel bearing. A low-speed squeak at parking lot turns points to ball joints or bushings. A clunk that appears specifically over bumps, speed bumps, dips, or potholes is an impact-load signal — something in the suspension is knocking against a hard stop or moving further than it should under vertical load.
On Tesla vehicles, the most common sources are sway bar end links, strut top mounts, control arm bushings, and in some cases loose mounting hardware. These bear the impact of road irregularities and deteriorate faster with Ontario’s potholes and freeze-thaw damage — a Model Y’s roughly 2,100 kg puts more sustained stress on these components than a comparable gas vehicle would.
Why Teslas Develop Clunks Faster Than Expected
EV Weight Accelerates Wear
A Model Y Performance weighs over 2,100 kg — 300–500 kg heavier than a comparable gas crossover. Links, mounts, and bushings that might last 150,000 km on a lighter vehicle reach end-of-life sooner.
GTA Potholes & Freeze-Thaw
Most GTA Teslas navigate stop-and-go city streets where pothole impacts are unavoidable, cycling the suspension to its travel limits repeatedly each winter.
Cold Weather Hardens Bushings
Rubber stiffens and becomes brittle with age in cold. A clunk that appears in November and seems to improve by spring is the cold-hardening effect, not the problem resolving.
Instant Torque Loads Suspension
Tesla’s instant torque places a different load pattern on subframe mounts and pivot points than a combustion engine’s gradual ramp — a minor factor that compounds with weight and pothole loading.
Components That Cause Clunking — By Model
Sway Bar End Links — Model Y & 3
Connect the sway bar to the strut/control arm. When the ball-and-socket joint wears, the link knocks with each suspension cycle — typically front-end, bilateral, one side often worse.
Strut Top Mount — Model Y & 3
Contains a thrust bearing and rubber isolator. When worn, produces a clunk or thud from the front over bumps — a known Model Y wear point on high-mileage vehicles.
Front Lower Control Arm Bushings — Model 3 & Y
As bushings wear, the arm develops free play, creating a knock under sharp impacts. Wear presents earlier on Teslas than on lighter gas vehicles.
Rear Trailing Arm Bushings — Model 3 & Y
Deteriorate with sustained load cycling, producing a duller, lower-pitched clunk from the rear — sometimes mistaken for exhaust or cargo noise.
Subframe & Hardware — All Models
Mounting hardware can lose torque over time on higher-mileage vehicles. We check hardware torque as part of any clunking diagnosis to rule this out.
Air Spring / Compressor — Model S & X
A failing air spring can let the chassis bottom out harder than intended, producing a clunk that’s actually chassis-to-bump-stop contact.
Is a Clunking Tesla Safe to Drive?
Depends which component is responsible. A worn sway bar end link reduces stability but isn’t immediately critical — address within a reasonable timeframe. A failed strut top mount causes steering imprecision and should be diagnosed promptly. Ball joint play is safety-critical and should be repaired without delay — see our suspension and ball joint page. Worn control arm bushings affect alignment and tire wear but won’t cause sudden failure — schedule repair once identified.
