Tire balancing and wheel alignment fix different problems. Confusing the two is one of the most common reasons drivers spend money on a service that doesn't resolve their symptom — or leave a shop still vibrating or still pulling. What Each Service Actually Does

Tire Balancing — Corrects Mass Distribution

  • Corrects uneven mass distribution in the tire and wheel assembly by adding small counterweights to the rim
  • Fixes: vibration at highway speed, steering wheel shake at a specific speed range (typically 80-110 km/h), seat vibration at cruise
  • Does NOT fix: pulling, uneven tire wear from geometry, bent rims, tire belt damage, bearing play, suspension looseness
  • Standard spin balance finds static and dynamic imbalance. Road force balance also detects road force variation (the tire generating cyclical lateral or radial force as it compresses under vehicle weight)
  • Should be performed at every seasonal tire swap and whenever tires are replaced

Wheel Alignment — Corrects Wheel Geometry

  • Corrects the geometric angles of the wheels relative to the vehicle and road surface: primarily toe (pointing in/out), camber (lean angle), and caster (strut inclination)
  • Fixes: vehicle pulling or drifting to one side, steering wheel off centre, uneven tire wear (inner or outer edge wear, feathering), handling imprecision
  • Does NOT fix: highway speed vibration from imbalance, bent rim wobble, tire belt damage, bearing hum, suspension clunks
  • Requires that all suspension components are intact — alignment on worn or bent suspension produces readings that don't last and may not fully correct
  • Should be performed after: pothole impacts, suspension work, new struts, tire replacement on high-mileage vehicles

Steering Wheel Vibrates at Highway Speed

The steering wheel shakes or vibrates at a specific speed range (often 80-110 km/h) during cruise. Present regardless of braking. Absent at lower city speeds.
Balance: most likely cause — imbalance in front tire/wheel assembly

Vehicle Pulls or Drifts to One Side

The vehicle requires constant steering correction or consistently tracks toward one side during cruise. Not related to road crown.
Alignment: most likely cause — check tire pressure and perform tire swap test first

Whole Vehicle Vibration at Speed

A vibration felt in the seat, floor, or throughout the whole vehicle at highway speed. Not specifically in the steering wheel.
Balance: rear tire imbalance most likely — standard spin balance of all four tires

Steering Wheel Off Centre at Straight Ahead

The steering wheel is rotated slightly to one side when the vehicle is tracking straight. Not a vibration — a geometric offset.
Alignment: geometric correction — toe or caster adjustment

Uneven Tire Wear — Inner or Outer Edge

One edge of the tread is wearing significantly faster than the rest. Wear visible across the full width is a pressure issue.
Alignment: camber correction — inner edge wear = negative camber; outer = positive camber

Still Vibrating After Balancing

Balancing was performed but the vibration persists. The standard spin balance found no significant imbalance, or balance weights were added but the shake continues.

Vibration After Seasonal Tire Swap

No vibration with the previous set, but vibration appeared immediately after installing the other season's tires.
Balance: the newly installed tires need to be balanced — weights from last season may have been lost

Pull Appeared After Tire Rotation

Vehicle pulled straight before a rotation, new pull appeared immediately after.
Alignment or tire: perform tire swap test first — if pull reverses, the tire is the source, not alignment

Why Balancing Still Fails — Causes Standard Balance Cannot Fix

A standard spin balance machine detects static and dynamic mass imbalance. It cannot detect or correct these four common causes of persisting vibration:

Bent Rim — The Wheel Is No Longer Round

Adding counterweights to a bent rim may achieve a balanced mass distribution on the balancer, but the wheel is physically distorted. As it rotates on the road, the out of round shape creates a rhythmic hop or wobble that no amount of weight placement can eliminate. The rim itself must be assessed — if the bend is in the bead seating area or the structural flange, the wheel should be replaced. See the Bent Rim Symptoms page for the full coverage.
Fix: rim assessment and replacement if structurally bent

Tire Belt Damage or Separation

A tire with shifted or separating internal belts may balance acceptably on a spin balancer (the mass distribution may still be even) but vibrates on the road because the tire is no longer uniformly round under load. The tire deforms unevenly as it rotates under vehicle weight, creating a force variation that transmits as a shake. Visible as a bulge, raised tread area, or sidewall bubble. Fix: tire replacement — balance cannot correct structural damage

Road Force Variation — Tire Generates Cyclical Force Under Load

A tire that passes standard spin balance may still generate significant cyclical force as it rotates under the vehicle's weight — this is road force variation. It occurs because the tire's construction is not perfectly uniform in stiffness around its circumference; softer and stiffer zones create a force pulse as the tire compresses and releases against the road. A road force balance machine (Hunter GSP9700 style) detects this by pressing a drum against the tire while it spins and measuring the force variation. Road force variation can often be reduced by rotating the tire on the rim to find the lowest force orientation.
Fix: road force balance — or tire replacement if variation exceeds specification

Wheel Bearing Play or Loose Hub

A wheel bearing with measurable play allows the hub and the entire rotating assembly (wheel, tire, rotor) to wobble slightly with each rotation. The wobble transmits as a vibration regardless of how precisely the tire is balanced. A standard balance performed on a hub with bearing play will find the tire acceptably balanced, but the vehicle will still vibrate because the hub itself is moving. Tire Balance vs Alignment — Toronto & GTA

The most consistent seasonal presentation for this cluster is the spring tire-swap vibration — winter tires being swapped off (often with lost balance weights from 4-5 months of road use) and summer tires being installed (sometimes from storage, with balance weights that may have shifted). Frequently Asked Questions

Does alignment fix steering wheel vibration?

Usually not. Steering wheel vibration at highway speed is almost always a rotating component issue: tire and wheel imbalance, a bent rim, a damaged tire with belt separation, or wheel bearing play. Alignment corrects wheel geometry — angles, not mass distribution. A vibration that is present at cruise speed and absent during braking is rarely resolved by alignment alone.

Does balancing fix a vehicle that pulls to one side?

Usually not. A consistent directional pull is almost always a geometric or force issue: alignment out of spec, tire radial pull force, unequal tire pressure, brake caliper drag, or worn suspension. Wheel balance corrects mass distribution — it removes vibration from heavy spots but does not change the direction the vehicle wants to travel. If the pull appeared after a tire rotation, perform the tire swap test (swap front tires side-to-side) before assuming alignment.

Can I need both balance and alignment at the same time?

Yes, and this is common at a seasonal tire swap. The tires being installed may have lost balance weights, causing vibration. The vehicle may also have alignment drift from winter wear, causing uneven tire wear or a slight pull. Having both checked at the same service is efficient — they address completely different symptoms and neither substitutes for the other.

Why does my car still shake after balancing?

The four causes a standard spin balance cannot fix: a bent rim (physically distorted — weights don't straighten it), tire belt damage (structural distortion that creates uneven force under load), road force variation (tire generates cyclical force as it compresses against the road — detectable only on a road force balance machine), and wheel bearing play (the hub wobbles slightly regardless of how well the tire is balanced).
