Why Rear Noise Is Harder to Localize
The rear of the vehicle is structurally more distant from the driver and transmits sound through multiple paths: the rear suspension mounts transmit vibration to the body, the rear floor and cargo area amplify certain frequencies, and rear noise often appears to come from the centre of the vehicle when the source is at one rear corner. A rear wheel bearing hum may sound like it is coming from somewhere under the seat rather than from the right rear wheel. A rear sway bar link clunk over a bump may sound like it originates from the boot or cargo area. The diagnostic process — confirming which condition triggers the noise and whether it follows speed, bumps, or braking — narrows the rear area source before any hands-on inspection.
Rear End Noise — Symptom to System Diagnostic
A speed-proportional hum or drone from the rear that rises consistently with vehicle speed and is present during cruise. Does the hum shift during a gentle lane change at highway speed? If yes — a rear wheel bearing is suspect on the side that gets louder when weight transfers away from it (drift left, right rear bearing suspect; drift right, left rear bearing suspect). If the hum doesn’t change in a lane drift — rear tyre cupping or tread pattern noise is more likely. Rear bearing noise typically transmits as seat or whole vehicle vibration rather than steering column vibration.

Single sharp clunk from the rear when hitting a bump, pothole, or dip. The most common causes in GTA ownership: rear sway bar end links (same ball socket wear mechanism as the front), worn rear shock absorber lower mounts (the rubber bush between the shock and subframe), worn rear control arm bushings, or a rear strut top mount on vehicles with rear struts. May also be a loose spare tyre carrier in SUVs — worth checking first.

A continuous rattle or chatter on rough surfaces rather than a single clunk on specific impacts. Most common: a loose rear brake caliper or parking brake cable bracket; loose rear heat shield; a loose or broken rear spring isolator pad; or a rear sway bar end link with more significant play producing continuous chatter rather than discrete clunks. Loose items in the boot or under cargo area floor mat are also worth eliminating first.

A rear hum or noise that intensifies, changes character, or produces a pulsing sensation when the rear brakes are applied. Rear brake rotor thickness variation produces a pulsation felt in the seat (not the steering wheel) and a pressure pulse through the brake pedal. Rear drum brake issues (common on older vehicles with rear drums) produce a grinding or scraping during braking. A worn rear bearing that is amplified by the axial force of braking is a combined bearing and brake load symptom.
Rear rotor variation, drum brake wear, or bearing under braking
A single clunk or knock that occurs during hard acceleration from a stop, or during engine braking deceleration, from the rear of the vehicle. In RWD and AWD vehicles, this is often a driveshaft U-joint with play (the driveshaft clunks as load direction reverses), a rear differential mount bushing worn enough to allow differential movement under torque, or a rear axle halfshaft joint in AWD. In FWD vehicles with a rear suspension, this is more likely a rear lower control arm bushing allowing forward-aft movement under chassis load.
Driveshaft U-joint, diff mount, or control arm bushing — load-reversal clunk
A rubbery squeak or creak from the rear on small, slow bumps or when the rear suspension moves slowly (speed humps, driveway lips at low speed). Typically a dried rear suspension bushing — rear lower control arm bushing, rear trailing arm bushing, or rear anti-roll bar end link bushing that has hardened and lost its lubricating properties. May also be a rear shock absorber bump stop contact. Distinct from a sharp metallic clunk.
Dried rear bushing or bump stop — lubrication or replacement
A resonant rattling or buzzing from the rear at a specific speed range (e.g. 90-110 km/h) that may diminish above or below that range. This is typically a heat shield resonance — the thin stamped metal exhaust heat shields have natural resonant frequencies and vibrate at road speeds that excite their resonant frequency. Also possible: a rear licence plate bracket vibrating, or loose rear strut tower hardware. Not typically structural.
Heat shield resonance or loose hardware — speed specific rattle
A noise that appears specifically during reversing — a scraping, grinding, or clicking while backing up. Most common: a worn or dragging rear parking brake shoe (rear drum vehicles), a brake pad that is loose enough to shift position, rear backing plate contact with the rotor from slight distortion, or in RWD/AWD vehicles, a worn driveshaft CV joint that only loads in a specific geometry during reversing.

Rear Tyre Cupping — The Noise That Mimics a Bearing
The most common source of rear end diagnostic confusion is cupped rear tyres sounding like a rear wheel bearing. Rear shock absorber or strut wear allows the rear wheels to bounce over road irregularities rather than tracking smoothly. This bouncing creates alternating high and low wear zones around the tyre circumference — cupping. A cupped rear tyre produces a rhythmic hum or roaring noise that rises with speed, is consistent at cruise, and is often perceived as a bearing hum.
The distinguishing test: tyre rotation. Rotate the rear tyres to the front. If the noise moves from the rear to the front, the source moved with the tyres — it is tyre cupping (tyre-origin), not a bearing (which stays at the same hub). Running your fingers around the tread circumference on a lifted vehicle will reveal the wave pattern of cupping on a worn tyre. The correct resolution for cupping is new rear tyres AND replacement of the worn rear shocks or struts that caused the cupping pattern.
Replacing only the tyres without the rear shocks will cause the new tyres to cup within months.
