Bent Rim Symptoms — All Six Signs
Highway Vibration That Appeared After a Pothole or Curb Hit
A vibration at highway speed that was absent before a specific impact and appeared immediately after is the most diagnostically specific bent rim presentation. The rim was circular before the impact and is no longer circular after it. The vibration is proportional to speed and may be felt in the steering wheel (front rim), seat (rear rim), or both. If the impact was severe enough to produce immediate vibration, the rim should be inspected before further highway driving.
Onset: immediate or within 1-2 km of the impact — distinct from gradual wear-related vibration
Vibration Persists After Wheel Balancing
A wheel balancer detects and corrects mass imbalance by adding counterweights. It cannot detect or correct out-of-roundness (radial runout) in the rim itself. A bent rim may balance acceptably on a spin balancer — the weights achieve even mass distribution — but the wheel's distorted shape still creates a rhythmic hop on the road. If a vibration returns after balancing or was never resolved by balancing, bent rim or road force variation in the tire should be the next investigation.

Slow Air Leak — Tire Loses Pressure Repeatedly
A bent rim in the bead seating area (the ledge inside the rim where the tire bead seats and seals) creates a gap that allows air to escape slowly. The tire may hold pressure for several days before needing inflation, but refilling it without addressing the rim means the leak recurs. A tire with a bead-area leak may not be obvious until the rim is cleaned of road grime and inspected. GTA winters compound this: salt corrodes the bead seat area, and even a minor bend combined with corrosion can produce a chronic slow leak that appears to be a tire leak but is actually the rim.
Pattern: same tire repeatedly loses 10-20 PSI over days or weeks without a puncture
Visible Damage on the Inner or Outer Lip
The inner lip of the rim — the edge that faces the vehicle — is where most pothole bends occur because the tire sidewall cannot fully cushion a sharp vertical impact there. Inner lip bends are not visible unless the tire is removed or the vehicle is on a lift with the wheel turned. The outer lip (visible from the outside) is more commonly damaged by curb impacts during parking. A visible flat spot, dent, or stepped ridge on either lip confirms the wheel requires evaluation.

Wobble at Low Speed — Visible or Felt Through Pedals
A severely bent rim may produce a noticeable wobble visible in the wheel or felt as a pulsing through the brake pedal at low speeds. At very low speeds (parking lot, slow street), the wobble may be visible to someone watching the wheel from outside the vehicle. This level of distortion typically indicates a significant bend and should not be driven on at highway speeds.

Tire That Won't Seal or Mount Concentrically
When a tire is mounted on a bent rim, the bead may not seat uniformly around the entire circumference of the wheel. This can cause the tire to run slightly eccentric — off-centre relative to the wheel's rotation axis — even after balancing. The result is a residual vibration and uneven bead seating that may produce a "lump" sensation at low speed. In severe cases, the tire cannot be inflated to seat the bead fully.

Why Balancing Cannot Fix a Bent Rim
This is the most important mechanical distinction on this page. A standard spin balancer works by spinning the wheel and measuring where mass is unequally distributed — then adding counterweights at specific positions to cancel out that imbalance. It measures mass, not shape.
A bent rim that is no longer circular will create a vibration from its out of round shape as it rolls on the road — one up and down cycle per revolution of the wheel. The balancer cannot detect this because it's not a mass problem; it's a geometry problem. Adding counterweights to a bent rim produces a wheel that is mass balanced but geometrically distorted. On the road, the vehicle still vibrates. The only tools that detect rim out-of-roundness are a road force balance machine (which presses a drum against the spinning tire to measure radial runout) and visual/caliper inspection of the rim on a bench. If a standard balance performed by another shop did not resolve a post-pothole vibration, the rim or tire geometry is the likely cause that was missed.
One Pothole — Multiple Systems Affected
A single hard pothole impact can damage several vehicle systems simultaneously. This is why a post-pothole inspection should go beyond the wheel and tire.
Rim — Bead Seat or Structural Bend
The most common and most visible damage. Inner lip bends from vertical pothole impact; outer lip bends from curb impacts. Severity ranges from minor bead-area distortion (slow air leak, no vibration) to structural flange damage (vibration, wheel integrity risk).

Tire — Sidewall Bruise or Belt Damage
The tire sidewall is compressed sharply against the rim during a pothole impact, potentially bruising the internal ply cords or displacing the steel belt. A bruise may produce a visible sidewall bubble immediately or days later. Internal belt damage may not be visible externally but creates a structurally weakened tire. Alignment — Geometric Displacement
A hard impact can shift a control arm, tie rod, or strut from its geometry, changing the toe, camber, or caster on that corner. Wheel Bearing — Impact Load on Race
A sharp radial impact applies a shock load to the inner and outer bearing race. In severe impacts, this can crack the race or fragment a ball, producing an immediate noise. Control Arm or Tie Rod — Physical Bend
In severe impacts (deep pothole at highway speed), the control arm or tie rod can be physically bent. A bent component cannot be aligned back into specification — the geometry is permanently distorted. Alignment on a bent control arm produces readings that look acceptable in some angles but the vehicle still handles incorrectly and the alignment cannot be held.

Strut or Shock — Seal or Piston Damage
A severe impact can damage the strut piston rod or the seal, accelerating fluid loss and reducing damping. The vehicle may immediately feel harsher over subsequent bumps. Strut damage from pothole impact is less common than the above but should be assessed if the vehicle's ride character changed after the impact.

Bent Rim Symptoms — Toronto & GTA

Gardiner Expressway surface failures. Bent inner lip on the right-front wheel from Gardiner lane potholes is a distinctive Mimico pattern.
Allen Road and 401. Post-pothole vibration that didn't resolve after another shop's balance is a consistent North York referral pattern — the other shop found "acceptable balance" on a rim with radial runout.
Hwy 400 north. SUV and truck rims from Hwy 400 show higher-severity bends due to heavier vehicle mass transmitting more impact energy to the rim.
401 west. Lower-profile tires on Mississauga vehicles are more susceptible to rim damage — the shorter sidewall provides less impact absorption and the rim contacts the pavement edge directly.
Queen Street and 427. Steel wheel bends from older Brampton vehicles — steel wheels bend at lower impact energies than alloy but are also more repairable if the bend is minor.
404 and 400. Winter pothole bends from the 404 are a regular spring finding from Richmond Hill — the 404 surface is particularly aggressive for rim damage.
DVP and city streets. City pothole damage on lower-profile urban tires is a consistent downtown pattern — the combination of aggressive city road surface and short sidewalls produces frequent rim bead-seat damage.
400 south. Highway pothole bends from the 400 south segment — both alloy and steel wheel damage consistent with the same February-April pothole season.

How do I know if my rim is bent?
The most specific signs: vibration at highway speed that appeared immediately after a pothole or curb impact; vibration that persists after wheel balancing has been performed; a slow air leak from one tire that refills but loses pressure again within days; and a visible flat spot or dent on the inner or outer rim lip (the inner lip requires lifting the vehicle to see). Can a bent rim cause highway vibration?
Yes — and it is one of the most common causes of persistent post-pothole highway vibration. A bent rim is no longer circular. As it rotates at speed, the out-of-round shape creates a rhythmic hop that transmits through the suspension. Standard spin balancing corrects mass distribution but cannot straighten a distorted rim. If balancing has already been performed and the vibration remains, rim geometry is the next investigation.
Can I keep driving on a bent rim?
It depends on severity. A minor bend with no air leak and no vibration may be driveable short-term. A bend causing a slow air leak is a safety concern — the tire can lose pressure unexpectedly at highway speed or in cold temperatures. A bend causing visible wobble or a significant vibration should be inspected before further highway driving. The rim is a structural component; cracks can propagate under load.
Can a pothole damage more than just the rim?
Yes — often simultaneously. A single hard pothole impact can bend the rim, bruise the tire internally, shift alignment by displacing a control arm or tie rod, and apply a shock load to the wheel bearing race. A vehicle that pulls to one side, produces new noise, or continues to vibrate after rim and tire inspection may have alignment, suspension, or bearing damage that also requires attention.
