Normal Tire Noise vs Noise That Needs Investigation
Not all road noise from new tires is a problem. Tyre sound changes when you change tyre design, and the change is sometimes significant enough that a driver wonders if something went wrong. The key question is the character of the noise — specific qualities indicate normal tread behaviour versus an inspection-worthy cause.
Normal — Tyre Tread Character
- A consistent, even hiss or roar at speed that is louder on coarse asphalt and quieter on smooth tarmac — this is tread pattern air displacement against the road surface
- Winter tires are naturally louder than touring all-season tires due to softer compound and larger, more open tread blocks with more edge contacts per rotation
- All-terrain or aggressive-pattern tires produce a consistent drone or growl that rises with speed — expected from a high-void tread design
- Performance tires with directional or asymmetric tread may produce a slightly different tone on left and right turns — normal tread behaviour
- Noise that reduces gradually over the first 500-1000 km as the tread surface wears lightly and the mould release coating weathers off
Not Normal — Investigate

- Rhythmic thumping or chopping at lower speeds that becomes a strong vibration at highway speed — structural tyre damage or belt movement; see Tire Belt Separation Symptoms
- Noise that is dramatically different between front and rear corners, or that is clearly louder from one specific wheel area
- A noise that moves to a different corner after tyre rotation — this moved with the tyre, confirming tyre origin cause
- A hum that was absent with the previous tyre set and is present with the new set on the same vehicle, making a lane change test result clearly different on one side
Why New Tires Can Reveal Pre-Existing Bearing Noise
This is the most important diagnostic insight for post-swap noise complaints: worn tires — particularly those with significant road noise from cupping, uneven wear, or aggressive patterns — can mask a wheel bearing hum that was developing beneath them. When the worn tires are replaced with new, quieter touring tires, the overall road noise level drops. In the resulting quieter interior, the wheel bearing hum that was always present becomes audible for the first time.
The driver's experience: the new tires made it noisier. The actual situation: the new tires made everything else quieter, and an existing bearing noise is now audible. The test: the lane change test. Drift slowly left at highway speed — if the hum increases, the right bearing is suspect. Drift slowly right — left bearing suspect. Tyre tread noise does not respond to gentle lateral weight transfer.
Most common in high mileage GTA vehicles swapping from worn all season tires to new winter tires in November, or from worn winter tires to new summer tires in April. The previous set was producing enough road noise to mask a bearing hum that had been developing. The new set is significantly quieter, making the bearing audible within days of the swap. The swap did not cause the bearing noise — it revealed it.
What Specific Noises Indicate
A smooth hum or roar that rises linearly with speed and is present at cruise regardless of braking. Possible causes: tyre tread noise from a louder pattern than the previous set; wheel bearing noise revealed by quieter new tyres; or rear differential noise in RWD/AWD vehicles. Perform the lane-change test and tyre rotation test to separate tyre from bearing.

A rhythmic chop or thwack at city speed that becomes a stronger vibration at highway speed. This is not normal tyre sound — it indicates cupping or flat spotting (a tyre stored in one position develops a temporary flat spot from rubber creep), or structural damage from a belt separation event. Flat spots from storage typically resolve within 20 km; chopping from cupping or belt damage does not.

A hum that clearly originates from one wheel area, is present at speed, and does not move after tyre rotation. This stayed put when the tyre moved — it is in the hub, not the tyre. Wheel bearing at that corner. Confirmed by hub play check on the lift.
Wheel bearing — inspect hub play at that corner
A hum that was at the front left, for example, and is now at the front right after a front-to-front rotation. The source moved with the tyre — it is a tyre origin noise from cupping, feathering, or tread pattern asymmetry. Tyre replacement or further rotation is the resolution.

A squealing from a specific corner at low speed or during slow turns. Not a continuous hum — a squeal or squeak. Most likely cause: a brake pad wear indicator making contact (the metal tab that contacts the rotor when pads are worn to minimum thickness). Unrelated to the tyre swap, but revealed post swap when the driver is listening more carefully.

The noise is significantly louder on coarse asphalt than on smooth concrete, and reduces noticeably on smooth surfaces. This is normal tread-pattern behaviour — the new tyre design has more tread edges in contact with the road texture than the previous set. Not a fault. Can alignment cause noisy tires?
Not immediately — but over time, alignment issues create uneven tyre wear patterns (inner edge wear from negative camber, feathering from toe misalignment) that become noisy. If new tyres are installed on a vehicle with uncorrected alignment, the wear pattern will develop again and produce noise within months. If an existing tyre shows feathering or inner/outer edge wear at the time of installation, alignment should be checked before the new set wears the same way.
