ToggleTesla Model 3 Ball Joint & Upper Control Arm Repair in Toronto
Creaking, squeaking, clunking, steering looseness, or uneven tire wear? Radman Auto Repair diagnoses and repairs Tesla Model 3 front suspension issues properly.
Hearing a creak, squeak, or clunk from the front end of your Tesla Model 3? This is one of the most common issues we see from GTA Model 3 owners — and Ontario road salt makes it significantly worse than in drier climates. The front upper control arm ball joint on the Model 3 has a well-documented design flaw that allows water ingression, leading to corrosion and noise — and eventually a safety risk if ignored.
Radman is EV certified and has been diagnosing Model 3 suspension issues for Toronto and Etobicoke drivers since the Model 3 launched. We understand the specific failure mode, the TSB history, and the right way to fix it — not the quick way. See why GTA Tesla owners trust us.
Section 01
What’s Actually Failing on Your Model 3
The front upper control arm on the Tesla Model 3 connects the front wheel’s steering knuckle to the chassis, allowing the wheel to move up and down over bumps while maintaining precise steering geometry. At the end of this arm is a ball joint — a spherical bearing that permits smooth multi-directional movement.
Tesla’s original design used a hybrid construction of steel and fibre-reinforced plastic, with a plastic cap over the ball joint. The problem: the lip of that cap sits at the lowest point of the arm. Water drains onto the arm, seeps under the cap, and gets trapped. Over time, this moisture washes out the grease, causes corrosion, and creates the characteristic squeak or creak.
Why GTA Drivers Are Hit Harder
Ontario road salt is exceptionally corrosive to steel ball joint components. Toronto and Etobicoke drivers covering winter roads accelerate this failure significantly compared to dry-climate Tesla owners.
Critically: the ball joint on the Model 3’s upper control arm is not serviceable separately. Tesla supplies the arm as a complete assembly — which means when the ball joint fails, the entire front upper control arm must be replaced.

Tesla Service Bulletins & Recalls You Need to Know
This is not a fringe issue. Tesla has formally acknowledged the problem and issued multiple service documents.
Service Bulletin SB-20-31-006
Applies to: 2018–2020 Model 3, Model Y, and Model X
Tesla acknowledged water can enter the ball joint and cause corrosion and creaking. The reseal fix may not reverse existing corrosion. Full control arm replacement is the permanent solution when noise is already present.
NHTSA Recall 21V-835
Applies to: 2019–2021 Model 3 and 2020–2021 Model Y
A separate but related recall involving front lateral link fasteners that could loosen and cause loss of vehicle control. This should be checked on affected vehicles.

Symptoms: What You’re Hearing & What It Means
The Model 3’s near-silent drivetrain makes suspension noises far more noticeable than in gas vehicles. Here’s how to read what you’re hearing.
Creaking / Squeaking
Most common first symptom. Loudest at low speeds, parking lots, slow turns, or steering lock to lock.
Clunking / Knocking
The squeak has progressed to a clunk over bumps or braking. This indicates significant ball joint play.
Steering Vagueness
The steering feels less precise, or the car wanders slightly because wheel geometry shifts unpredictably.
Uneven Tire Wear
Unusual inner or outer tire wear. No alignment will hold until the worn arm is replaced.
Pulling / Instability
Advanced failure. Stop driving and book service immediately if the vehicle feels unstable.
How the Failure Progresses if Ignored
Rainwater and road spray enter the ball joint. Grease is gradually washed away.
Metal surfaces corrode and grind. The creak appears during parking manoeuvres and slow turns.
The joint develops measurable play. Alignment cannot be maintained and tires wear unevenly.
If ignored, the joint can separate and cause immediate loss of steering control on that wheel.
Section 04
The Right Repair: Upper Control Arm Replacement
Because the ball joint is not separately serviceable, replacement of the complete front upper control arm assembly is the only permanent fix. Attempts to grease or reseal the original joint are temporary.
We inspect the upper control arms, lower control arms, sway bar links, compression rods, and bushings.
We install the most current part revision, not old-stock arms carrying the original water-ingress issue.
We check suspension lateral link fasteners in light of recall history.
We follow the correct torque values, tool requirements, and installation sequence.
Replacing any control arm changes suspension geometry. Alignment is required after repair.
