⚡ Servicing your car at an independent shop does not void your vehicle warranty — protected under Canadian consumer protection law.
By the Radman Auto Repair team, independent auto repair in Etobicoke since 1999 · Updated October 2026
Many new-car owners believe they have to service their car at the dealer to keep the warranty. They do not. Your warranty covers defects in how the car was built; it does not require that oil changes, brakes, tires and other maintenance be done by the dealer. What matters is that maintenance is done on schedule, with the right parts and fluids, and that you keep the records.
Quick answer: servicing your car at an independent shop does not void your new-car warranty. Follow the maintenance schedule, use parts and fluids that meet the specification, and keep your invoices.
At a glance
- Warranty covers: manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship
- You need to: follow the maintenance schedule and keep records
- Parts and fluids: must meet the manufacturer’s specification; they do not have to come from the dealer
- Warranty repairs & recalls: done free at the dealer
- Your invoices: list the date, kilometres, work, parts and fluids
What Keeps Your Warranty Intact
Follow the schedule service at the intervals in your owner’s manual, including the severe-service schedule if your driving fits it.
Use the right fluids the oil grade and approvals, coolant and transmission fluid your manual specifies.
Use quality parts OEM or parts that meet the original specification.
Keep every invoice with the date, odometer, work done, and parts and fluids used.
What Your Warranty Does and Does Not Cover
- Covered: defects in materials and workmanship, repaired by the dealer at no charge during the warranty period.
- Not covered: maintenance and wear items such as oil changes, filters, brake pads and rotors, tires, wiper blades and batteries (unless defective).
- Can be refused: failures caused by missed maintenance, the wrong parts or fluids, accidents, misuse or faulty repair work.
- Your booklet decides: read the warranty booklet for your vehicle; it lists exactly what is covered and what is required.
How Radman Protects Your Warranty

Common maintenance we do on cars under warranty: synthetic oil changes, brakes, multi-point inspections and Tesla service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will using an independent shop void my new-car warranty?
No, not by itself. New-vehicle warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship, and warranty booklets in Canada generally allow scheduled maintenance at any qualified repair facility, as long as it is done on schedule with parts and fluids that meet the specification and you keep the records.
Do I have to use original-equipment (OEM) parts?
For maintenance, parts and fluids need to meet the manufacturer’s specification; they do not have to come from the dealer. We use OEM or OEM-equivalent parts and the fluids your owner’s manual calls for, and we list them on your invoice.
What records should I keep?
Keep every invoice with the date, odometer reading, the work done and the parts and fluids used. Our invoices include all of that, so they serve as your service history.
Can a dealer deny a warranty claim because I serviced elsewhere?
A claim can be denied when a failure was caused by missed maintenance, the wrong parts or fluids, or faulty work, not simply because the work was done somewhere else. Following the schedule and keeping records protects you.
Should warranty repairs and recalls go to the dealer?
Yes. Repairs covered by the manufacturer’s warranty and safety recalls are done by the dealer at no charge. If we find a problem that looks like a warranty or recall item, we will tell you so you can take it to the dealer.
Does this apply to Teslas and EVs?
Yes. Tesla and other EV owners can have maintenance and non-warranty repairs done at an independent shop. Keep your invoices just as you would for any car.
