Brakes tell you when something is wrong: a squeal, a grind, a pulse in the pedal or an amber ABS light on the dash. Some of those noises are harmless and some mean you should stop driving soon. Radman Auto Repair diagnoses brake noise and ABS warnings in Etobicoke, measures the pads and rotors, and fixes the cause instead of slapping on pads.

Quick answer: a high squeal is usually worn pads or a wear indicator; grinding usually means metal on metal and needs attention now. The amber ABS light means anti-lock is off but your brakes still work; a red BRAKE light that stays on means stop and get it checked.

At a glance

  • Squealing: wear indicator, glazed pads, missing shims or lubricant
  • Grinding: pads worn to the metal, a seized caliper or a stone caught behind the rotor
  • ABS light: usually a wheel speed sensor or its wiring
  • Red BRAKE light: parking brake on, low fluid or a hydraulic fault
  • Pricing: call (416) 742-4521 for a quote for your vehicle

Brakes Squealing: Common Causes

Wear indicator a metal tab on many pads that squeals against the rotor when the pads are getting low.

Glazed pads or rotors overheated surfaces turn hard and shiny and squeal instead of gripping.

Missing shims or lubricant pads vibrating in the caliper bracket make a high-pitched noise.

Low-quality pads hard, cheap compounds are often noisier and wear the rotors faster.

Rust after rain a light squeal or scrape on the first few stops that goes away is normal surface rust.

Dust and debris brake dust or road grit trapped between pad and rotor.

Brakes Grinding: Stop Soon

Pads worn to the metal the friction material is gone and the steel backing plate is cutting into the rotor.

Seized caliper or slides road salt stops a pad from releasing, so it drags and wears through.

Stone or debris a small stone caught between the rotor and the dust shield makes a constant scrape.

Rusted rotor edge a car that sits for weeks can grind until the rust is scrubbed off.

Grinding that comes with a pull to one side, a burning smell or a hot wheel usually means a dragging brake. See why catching caliper problems early saves money and brake pulsation diagnosis.

ABS Light On: What It Means

The ABS (anti-lock braking system) light comes on when the system finds a fault and turns anti-lock off. Your brakes still stop the car, but the wheels can lock up in an emergency stop on ice or rain. Traction and stability control often switch off at the same time, so you may see those lights too.

  • Wheel speed sensor: the most common cause. Sensors at each wheel are exposed to salt, water and debris.
  • Sensor wiring or tone ring: corroded connectors, chafed wires or a cracked or rusted tone ring on the hub or axle.
  • Worn wheel bearing: on many cars the sensor reads from the bearing, so a loose bearing upsets the signal. See wheel bearing noise.
  • Low brake fluid: often with the red BRAKE light. See brake fluid flush.
  • ABS module, pump or fuse: less common, and confirmed by testing before anything is replaced.

Red BRAKE light: if the red brake warning stays on with the parking brake released, or the pedal feels soft or sinks, do not keep driving. Call us at (416) 742-4521.

How We Diagnose and Repair Brakes

  1. Road test to hear the noise, feel the pedal and check for pulling.
  2. Measure, do not guess pad thickness on both sides, rotor thickness and runout, and caliper movement.
  3. Scan the ABS system read the stored codes and live wheel speed data to find the corner at fault.
  4. Check the fluid level and condition; brake fluid absorbs water over time.
  5. Repair properly quality pads, rotors when needed, cleaned and lubricated hardware, and sensors or wiring repaired at the source.
  6. Test again road test and confirm the warning lights are off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my brakes squeal?

Most often the wear indicator, a small metal tab built into many pads, is touching the rotor to tell you the pads are low. Glazed pads, missing shims or lubricant, and low-quality pads also squeal. A light squeal on the first stops after rain or a car wash is surface rust and is normal.

Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?

Not for long. Grinding usually means metal on metal: the pad friction material is gone and the backing plate is cutting into the rotor. Stopping distances get longer and a cheap pad job turns into rotors and sometimes calipers. Book an inspection right away.

What does the ABS light mean?

The anti-lock braking system has found a fault and switched itself off. Your normal brakes still work, but the wheels can lock in a hard stop on ice or wet roads. The most common cause is a wheel speed sensor or its wiring.

What is the difference between the ABS light and the red brake light?

The amber ABS light means the anti-lock system is off. The red BRAKE light means the parking brake is on, the brake fluid is low, or there is a hydraulic fault. If the red light stays on with the parking brake released, stop driving and have the car checked.

How long do brake pads last?

It depends on the car and how you drive. Many last 40,000 to 70,000 km, city driving wears them faster, and road salt can seize the hardware long before the pads are worn. We measure them at every service.

Will having the work done at an independent shop affect my warranty?

No. Using an independent shop for maintenance and repairs does not void your new-vehicle warranty. Keep your invoices; we document the parts and work on every job.

Alex is a great guy. He took the time to respond by phone and walk me through my options for my Tesla Model Y 2024 and gave me his perspectives as a Tesla owner. Top recommendation in my books for the Toronto area.

I cannot say enough good things about Livio and the team at Radman Auto Repair in Rexdale. We brought in my son’s 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer because the A/C was malfunctioning. We had already been to two other shops, paid for diagnostics, and received different explanations, so we were frustrated and unsure what to do next. Livio was outstanding. He listened carefully, looked at the issue, and explained everything clearly and in detail in a way that actually made sense. He was able to narrow down what was going on within minutes, without guessing, pressure, or recommending unnecessary work. What really stood out was that he did not charge us another diagnostic fee after learning we had already paid for two separate diagnoses. Even better, the work was completed the same day, which was a huge relief. It is rare to find a mechanic who is knowledgeable, honest, patient, efficient, and genuinely focused on helping customers understand the real issue before they spend money on repairs. Livio truly gets it. We are so happy we found Radman Auto Repair and would highly recommend Livio and his team to anyone looking for trustworthy, skilled, and customer-focused service..

My 2015 Honda CR-V was blowing hot air and making noise when the A/C was on. The Compressor and Expansion valve needed replacement due to metal debris in the system. I rarely write reviews, but I felt it would be wrong not to appreciate Radman for their service, especially after what I went through before finding them. I’m writing this one month after the repair because I wanted to test my A/C on multiple long trips before recommending them. One thing I learned from this experience is that many mechanics know how to replace parts, but very *few follow the right procedures* and perform the proper checks. I initially went for a cheaper repair at a local mechanic. The problem came back, and afterward he didn’t seem to know what to do next. I found Radman through Google reviews without any personal recommendation, so I was taking a chance. They properly diagnosed the issue, explained everything clearly before starting the work, didn’t exaggerate the problem, and charged me a reasonable price. A/C issues can be complicated but they answered all my questions and I honestly haven’t had such a good and detailed conversation with a mechanic in the GTA about an A/C problem. Their knowledge and experience with A/C systems really stood out. I also had a catalytic converter issue. Another mechanic simply recommended replacing it, which would have cost at least $2,000. Radman explained that considering the age and condition of my 2015 CR-V, such an expensive replacement might not make sense. They gave me the replacement cost but also suggested trying Cataclean first. I tried it, and so far I haven’t had any issues. After a month and several long trips, my A/C is still working well. It’s rare to find this combination of knowledge, transparency, and honesty. Thank you, Radman, for the knowledgeable and honest service. I genuinely appreciate it.

Finding a mechanic who actually understands EVs and is completely trustworthy is hard to come by, but Radman Repair is excellent. The service was top-notch, they explained everything to me with so much patience, and the overall experience was a 10/10. 100% recommended!
