Your exhaust carries hot, toxic gas from the engine to the back of the car, quietly and cleanly. When it leaks, rattles or loses its catalytic converter, you hear it, smell it or see a check engine light. Radman Auto Repair diagnoses and repairs exhaust systems in Etobicoke, from a loose heat shield to a full catalytic converter replacement.
Smell exhaust inside the car? carbon monoxide has no smell of its own, but an exhaust smell means fumes are getting in. Open the windows and have it checked right away.

Signs of an Exhaust Problem
Louder than usual a deeper rumble or roar, especially accelerating.
Ticking or tapping loudest when cold and fading as the metal expands: a manifold leak.
Rattle or buzz from under the car over bumps or at certain revs.
Exhaust smell in the cabin or around the car.
Rotten-egg smell sulphur from an overloaded or failing catalytic converter.
Check engine light catalyst or oxygen sensor codes.
Catalytic Converter Problems and Theft
A catalytic converter rarely fails on its own. Misfires, a rich fuel mixture or an engine burning oil overheat and clog it, so replacing the converter without fixing the cause means paying twice. That is why we follow the steps in our P0420 catalyst efficiency guide before quoting a converter.
Catalytic converter theft is common in the GTA. If your car suddenly sounds like a race car after being parked, look underneath for a cut pipe, report it to the police and your insurer, and do not drive far: exhaust can enter the cabin. We replace the converter and repair the cut pipes.
How We Repair Exhausts
- Inspect on the hoist pipes, flex joint, muffler, hangers, heat shields and the manifold.
- Find the leak by sound, by sight and, for small leaks, with the engine running and the exhaust warm.
- Check the sensors oxygen sensor and catalyst data when a code is stored.
- Repair the right way secure a heat shield, replace a hanger, gasket, flex pipe, section or muffler, or the converter.
- Test confirm it is quiet and leak-free and that the check engine light stays off.
Rattles and hums can also come from the suspension or wheel bearings. See rear end noise diagnosis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my car suddenly so loud?
A hole in the muffler or pipe, a cracked flex pipe or a failed gasket lets exhaust out before the muffler. If it went from quiet to a roar overnight after being parked, check whether the catalytic converter was stolen.
Is an exhaust leak dangerous?
It can be. Exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. If you smell exhaust inside the car, drive with the windows open and have it checked right away.
What are the signs of a bad catalytic converter?
A check engine light with P0420 or P0430, a rotten-egg smell, a rattle from under the car, poor acceleration or a feeling that the engine is choking at higher speed. Converters usually fail because of another problem, such as a misfire or burning oil.
Can I drive without a catalytic converter?
The car will run, very loudly, with a check engine light, and removing or deleting a catalytic converter is illegal in Ontario. If yours was stolen, call your insurer; theft is often covered under comprehensive coverage.
Is an aftermarket catalytic converter OK?
A quality, emissions-compliant aftermarket converter is fine on many cars. Some vehicles are sensitive and only clear their converter monitor with an original-equipment part. We tell you which applies to your car before you choose.
Will having the work done at an independent shop affect my warranty?
No. Using an independent shop for maintenance and repairs does not void your new-vehicle warranty. Keep your invoices; we document the parts and work on every job.
