Every Tesla cleans the air coming into the cabin through activated-carbon cabin air filters. When those filters clog, you get weaker airflow, slower defogging and, very often, a musty or mouldy smell the moment the A/C or heat comes on. Radman Auto Repair replaces Tesla cabin air filters for Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X owners in Toronto and Etobicoke, and when the smell is coming from deeper in the system, we find and treat the source.

Quick answer: A musty smell from a Tesla’s vents is usually a dirty cabin air filter combined with moisture on the A/C evaporator. Replace both cabin filters first. If the smell returns within weeks, the evaporator needs cleaning or the A/C drain is blocked.

Signs Your Tesla Cabin Air Filter Needs Replacing
Musty or mouldy smell when the fan, A/C or heat first turns on, often worse in humid weather or after rain.
Weaker airflow the same fan speed moves less air than it used to, especially from the dash vents.
Slow defogging the windshield takes longer to clear because less dry air is reaching the glass.
More dust and pollen dust on the dash returns quickly, or allergy symptoms flare up inside the car.
Leaves or debris visible in the filter or housing, common if you park under trees.
Two years since the last change Tesla’s schedule interval, even if you have not noticed a problem.
Why Teslas Develop a Mouldy Smell
Your Tesla’s A/C (and, on newer cars, its heat pump) runs refrigerant through an evaporator behind the dashboard. Cooling the air pulls moisture out of it, so the evaporator is wet whenever the A/C is working. After you park, that moisture sits in a dark, enclosed space. If the cabin filter is loaded with pollen, dust and leaf debris, the combination feeds mould and bacteria, and the fan pushes the smell into the cabin.
The smell tends to be strongest:
- in the first minute after you turn the climate on
- in spring and fall, when humid days follow cool nights
- if recirculation is left on most of the time, which keeps the damp air trapped in the system
- if the A/C condensate drain is partly blocked, which can also leave the passenger carpet damp
Not a musty smell? A sweet smell can mean a coolant leak; see foggy windows and coolant smell. A burning or electrical smell needs attention right away. Call (416) 742-4521.
Tesla Cabin Air Filters by Model
Model 3: two activated-carbon cabin filters behind the passenger footwell trim panel. Replace both together.
Model Y: two cabin filters in the same passenger footwell location. Replace both together.
Model S: cabin air filters, plus a large HEPA filter on vehicles equipped with Bioweapon Defense Mode.
Model X: cabin air filters, plus a large HEPA filter on vehicles equipped with Bioweapon Defense Mode.
Filter layout varies by model year, so we confirm the correct filters for your car from the VIN before ordering. Tesla lists the cabin filter at every two years and the HEPA filter, where fitted, at every three years.
What We Do When We Replace Your Cabin Filters
- Inspect the old filters and housing for leaves, debris and signs of moisture.
- Replace both cabin filters with activated-carbon filters made for your model.
- Check the A/C condensate drain and passenger footwell for blockages and dampness that would bring the smell back.
- Clean and treat the evaporator when the smell comes from there so the odour is removed at the source, not covered up.
- Confirm airflow at every vent and on every fan speed before you leave.
How to Keep the Musty Smell from Coming Back
Use fresh air for part of every drive instead of leaving recirculation on all the time.
Dry the system on humid days by turning the A/C off and running the fan for the last few minutes of a drive.
Clear leaves from the base of the windshield, where outside air enters the system.
Replace filters on time every two years at most, or every year if you park under trees.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I replace my Tesla cabin air filter?
Tesla’s maintenance schedule calls for replacing the cabin air filter every two years. In GTA traffic, under trees or with allergies, once a year is a better interval. On Model S and Model X with Bioweapon Defense Mode, the large HEPA filter is on a longer schedule (Tesla lists every three years).
Why does my Tesla smell musty when I turn on the A/C?
The A/C evaporator behind the dash gets wet every time it cools the air. When the cabin filter is clogged with pollen, dust and leaves, that moisture and debris let mould and bacteria grow, and the fan blows the smell into the cabin, strongest in the first minute after you turn the climate on.
Will a new cabin air filter get rid of the mouldy smell?
Often, yes, especially if the old filters are dirty or damp. If the smell comes back within a few weeks, the evaporator itself needs cleaning or the A/C condensate drain is blocked. We check both when we replace the filters.
Where is the cabin air filter on a Model 3 or Model Y?
On Model 3 and Model Y the cabin air filters sit behind the trim panel in the passenger footwell. There are two filters, and both should be replaced together.
Can I replace the Tesla cabin air filter myself?
On a Model 3 or Model Y it is a manageable job if you are comfortable removing interior trim. Bring it to us if you want the drain and evaporator checked at the same time, or if the musty smell has not gone away after a filter change.
Does servicing my Tesla at an independent shop void the warranty?
No. Choosing an independent shop for service and repairs does not void your Tesla vehicle warranty. Keep your invoices; we document the parts and work on every job.
