By the Radman Auto Repair team, independent Tesla service in Etobicoke since 1999 · Updated October 2026

A Tesla pyro fuse (pyrotechnic fuse) is a one-time safety device in the high-voltage system. When the car detects a serious collision or a severe electrical fault, a small charge inside the fuse fires and permanently disconnects the high-voltage battery from the rest of the car. After that, the car will not drive or charge until the fuse is replaced. Radman Auto Repair replaces Tesla pyro fuses in-house, with high-voltage trained technicians, and finds out why the fuse fired so the problem does not come back.

Tesla pyro fuse replacement, high-voltage service at Radman Auto Repair, Etobicoke

Quick answer: If your Tesla will not go into Drive and shows high-voltage or “vehicle may not restart” alerts, especially after an accident, the pyro fuse may have fired. It cannot be reset. Do not try to repair it yourself; have the car brought in on a flatbed.

At a glance

  • What it is: a pyrotechnic fuse that disconnects the high-voltage battery in a fraction of a second
  • Why it fires: a serious collision (often with airbag deployment) or a severe high-voltage fault
  • Can it be reset?: no, it must be replaced
  • Who should replace it: only a technician trained for high-voltage work
  • Pricing: call (416) 742-4521 for a quote for your model

Signs the Pyro Fuse Has Fired

Car will not drive it will not shift into Drive or Reverse, even though the screen turns on.

High-voltage alerts messages about the high-voltage system, or that the vehicle may not restart or needs service.

Will not charge the charge port and charging do not work with the battery disconnected.

Right after an accident especially one where airbags or seatbelt pretensioners deployed.

After a serious electrical fault the car shut down suddenly and will not wake up for driving.

12-volt systems still work lights, screen and locks may operate while the drive system stays offline.

Safety first: a Tesla’s high-voltage battery carries several hundred volts. Never open battery covers, cut cables or try to reset or bypass the fuse. If the car was in a collision, leave it powered down and arrange a flatbed tow.

Why a Tesla Pyro Fuse Fires

Collision the crash sensors detect an impact serious enough to deploy restraints, and the fuse cuts high voltage to protect occupants and first responders.

Severe electrical fault a short circuit or extreme current in the high-voltage system.

Damage to high-voltage components from an impact underneath the car or to the front or rear structure.

Replacing the fuse without finding the cause can mean it fires again, or that damage is missed. That is why every pyro fuse replacement starts with diagnosis.

How We Replace a Tesla Pyro Fuse

  1. Diagnose first review the vehicle’s alerts and fault records to confirm the pyro fuse fired and why.
  2. Make the car safe disconnect the 12-volt system, follow the high-voltage isolation procedure and verify zero voltage before any work starts.
  3. Replace the pyro fuse with the correct part for your model, using insulated tools.
  4. Inspect the high-voltage system connectors, contactors and cabling, for damage from the event that fired the fuse.
  5. Test before release an isolation test, alerts cleared, then confirmation that the car drives and charges normally.

If airbags or seatbelt pretensioners deployed, those are separate one-time safety parts that must also be replaced as part of the collision repair.

After an Accident: Insurance

When the fuse fired because of a collision, its replacement is part of the collision damage. Make sure it is on the repair estimate; it is easy to miss because the car may look only lightly damaged. We can provide a diagnosis and a written quote for your insurer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Tesla pyro fuse?

It is a pyrotechnic fuse in the high-voltage system. A small charge inside it cuts the connection between the high-voltage battery and the rest of the car in a fraction of a second when the car detects a serious collision or a severe electrical fault. It protects occupants, first responders and the battery.

Can a Tesla pyro fuse be reset?

No. Once it has fired, the circuit inside is permanently open. The fuse has to be replaced, and the reason it fired has to be found.

Will my Tesla drive after the pyro fuse fires?

No. The high-voltage battery is disconnected, so the car cannot drive or charge, even though the screen and other 12-volt systems may still power up. The car needs to be transported on a flatbed.

Does the high-voltage battery need replacing too?

Not usually. The pyro fuse fires to protect the battery. We test the high-voltage system after the repair to confirm the battery and related components are healthy before the car goes back on the road.

Is pyro fuse replacement covered by insurance?

When the fuse fired because of a collision, it is part of the collision damage and should be included in the claim. We can provide a diagnosis and a written quote for your insurer.

Can I replace a Tesla pyro fuse myself?

No. The job involves the high-voltage battery, which carries several hundred volts. It should only be done by a technician trained for high-voltage work, using the proper isolation procedure and insulated tools.

Does servicing my Tesla at an independent shop void the warranty?

No. Choosing an independent shop for service and repairs does not void your Tesla vehicle warranty. Keep your invoices; we document the parts and work on every job.
