Struts, shocks and springs keep your tires on the road. When they wear, the car bounces, dives under braking, leans in turns and wears its tires unevenly, and it takes longer to stop. Ontario potholes and road salt are hard on all of it. Radman Auto Repair inspects suspension in Etobicoke, replaces worn parts in pairs and aligns the car afterwards.
Quick answer: bouncing after bumps, nose-dive when braking, cupped tires or oily shocks mean worn dampers. A clunk usually means a mount, link or bushing. Struts are replaced in pairs and followed by an alignment.
At a glance
- Worn struts or shocks: bouncing, nose-dive, body roll, cupped tire wear, leaking oil
- Clunks and knocks: strut mounts, sway bar links, bushings or ball joints
- Car sitting low on one corner: a broken coil spring, common with road salt
- After strut replacement: a wheel alignment is needed

Signs of Worn Struts and Shocks
Bouncing the car keeps moving up and down after a bump instead of settling.
Nose-dive and squat the front dips hard when you brake; the rear squats when you accelerate.
Body roll more lean in corners and on highway ramps.
Cupped tire wear a scalloped pattern of high and low spots on the tread.
Oil on the shock body a leaking damper has lost its fluid and its control.
Longer stopping worn dampers let the tires skip and lose grip under hard braking.
Other Suspension Parts We Check
Strut mounts & bearings clunks over bumps and a creak or bind when turning the wheel.
Sway bar links & bushings knocks and rattles over small bumps.
Coil springs road salt rusts them until a coil snaps; the car sits low or bangs.
Control arms & ball joints clunks, wandering and uneven tire wear.

How We Replace Struts and Shocks
- Road test and bounce test to feel the damping and hear any noises.
- Inspect on the hoist dampers, mounts, springs, links, bushings, ball joints and tires.
- Quote in pairs per axle, with complete strut assemblies or individual parts depending on the car and the condition of the springs and mounts.
- Replace and torque the fasteners with the car at ride height where required.
- Align set the alignment after strut replacement to protect your tires.
- Road test to confirm the ride, steering and noise.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my struts or shocks are worn?
The car keeps bouncing after a bump, the nose dives when you brake, it leans more in corners, the tires wear in a scalloped (cupped) pattern, or there is oily residue on the shock body. A bounce test and a look on the hoist confirm it.
What is the difference between a strut and a shock?
Both damp the spring’s movement. A strut is also a structural part of the suspension that holds the spring and sets the wheel’s angle, so replacing it affects alignment. A shock absorber is a separate damper that does not support the car’s weight.
Should struts and shocks be replaced in pairs?
Yes, always per axle, both fronts or both rears, so the car handles and brakes evenly. A new damper on one side and a worn one on the other can make the car unstable.
Do I need an alignment after replacing struts?
Yes. Replacing struts changes the suspension geometry, so we check and set the alignment afterwards to protect your tires. Shocks alone usually do not need it.
Why do coil springs break?
Road salt corrodes the spring coating, the steel rusts and a coil eventually snaps, often with a loud bang over a bump or in a cold snap. A broken spring can cut a tire, so it should be replaced right away, in pairs.
Will having the work done at an independent shop affect my warranty?
No. Using an independent shop for maintenance and repairs does not void your new-vehicle warranty. Keep your invoices; we document the parts and work on every job.
