Tesla headlight condensation is one of the most-discussed issues among Model 3, Y, S, and X owners, and one of the most misunderstood. A light misty film that clears within 15-20 minutes of the lights being on is a known, generally accepted characteristic of Tesla's partially-sealed LED headlight design. Standing water, a yellowed DRL strip, or a cracked housing is a different problem entirely, and one that only gets worse if left alone.

Normal Fog vs. a Failed Headlight Seal

Normal: a light, misty film in the corners or top edge that clears within 15-20 minutes of the lights being on, usually after a cold night, rain, or a car wash

Needs attention: large water droplets, streaks, or a visible puddle at the bottom of the housing that doesn't clear

Needs attention: the DRL (daytime running light) strip turning yellow or amber, a sign of long-term moisture damage that can't be reversed by drying it out

Replace immediately: a cracked or shattered lens from road debris or impact, or any water visibly sloshing inside

How Tesla Headlight Replacement Works

On Model 3 and Model Y, the headlight is accessed from behind the front bumper, not from the front — the bumper fascia has to come off first before the headlight assembly (typically held by 1-2 screws, a fender bracket bolt, and an electrical connector) can be removed. This is the main reason headlight replacement takes longer than the part swap itself would suggest.

Cost context: a single OEM Tesla headlight assembly typically runs $800-$1,200+ for parts alone. If your damage is from a collision or road debris, your comprehensive or collision insurance may cover it, worth checking before paying out of pocket.

After Replacement: Headlight Aim

Once a new headlight is installed, aim should be checked and adjusted through the touchscreen service menu — a misaimed headlight can blind oncoming traffic or leave you with reduced visibility, and it's a quick check we do as part of every headlight replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is condensation in my Tesla headlight normal?

A light misty film that clears within 15-20 minutes of the lights being on, often after a cold night or car wash, is considered a normal characteristic of Tesla's headlight design. Standing water or a puddle at the bottom of the housing is not normal and indicates a failed seal.

Why is my Tesla's daytime running light turning yellow?

This is almost always caused by long-term moisture exposure degrading the DRL strip's plastic. Once it has yellowed, drying it out will not reverse the discoloration; the DRL module or full headlight assembly needs to be replaced.

How much does Tesla headlight replacement cost?

A single OEM headlight assembly typically runs $800-$1,200+ for parts, plus labor for bumper removal and reinstallation. Call (416) 742-4521 for a quote specific to your model.

Will insurance cover my Tesla headlight replacement?

If the damage is from a collision or road debris impact, your comprehensive or collision coverage may apply, worth checking before paying out of pocket given OEM part costs.

Does a new headlight need to be recalibrated?

Headlight aim should be checked and adjusted through the touchscreen service menu after any replacement to ensure proper beam pattern for both your visibility and other drivers.
