Common Toyota Problems
Oil consumption on older 2.4 L engines some 2007–2011 Camry, RAV4 and Corolla 2.4 L engines burn oil because of piston ring design.
V6 water pump leaks a common source of coolant loss on the 3.5 L V6 in the Camry, RAV4, Highlander and Sienna.
“Lifetime” transmission fluid Toyota WS fluid lasts long, but severe GTA driving justifies a fluid service. See transmission fluid service.
Brake caliper slides Ontario salt seizes slide pins, wearing pads unevenly.
Hybrid cooling hybrid battery cooling fans and filters clog with dust and pet hair, reducing battery life.
No heat usually a thermostat or heater core restriction. See no heat in your Toyota.
Toyota Maintenance Notes
- Use Toyota Super Long Life coolant (pink) and the correct WS or CVT fluid.
- Most Toyota engines use timing chains; older V6s (before 2007) and some trucks use belts.
- Clean or check the hybrid battery cooling intake at every service on hybrids.
- Follow the severe-service schedule if you drive mostly short trips or in winter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Toyota hybrids need special service?
Hybrids need the same oil, brakes and coolant care, plus attention to the hybrid battery cooling system and inverter coolant. Their brakes also wear slowly and can seize, so they need cleaning and lubrication.
Does my Toyota’s transmission fluid ever need changing?
Toyota calls WS fluid long-life under normal driving, but stop-and-go traffic, winter and towing count as severe service. A fluid service at the severe interval protects the transmission.
Why is my Toyota losing coolant?
On V6 Toyotas the water pump is a common source; hoses, the radiator and the heater core are others. A pressure test finds it.
Can you service a Prius?
Yes. We service Prius and other Toyota hybrids: maintenance, brakes, cooling and diagnostics.
Will having the work done at an independent shop affect my warranty?
No. Using an independent shop for maintenance and repairs does not void your new-vehicle warranty. Keep your invoices; we document the parts and work on every job.
