⚡ Servicing your car at an independent shop does not void your vehicle warranty — protected under Canadian consumer protection law.
By the Radman Auto Repair team, independent auto repair in Etobicoke since 1999 · Updated October 2026
Slipping, harsh or late shifts, a shudder, a whine or a puddle of red fluid are early warnings from your transmission. Caught early, many are a fluid, sensor, solenoid or software problem. Ignored, they become a rebuild. Radman Auto Repair diagnoses automatic, CVT and dual-clutch transmissions in Etobicoke and services them with the fluid your car actually needs.
Quick answer: engine revs rising without the car speeding up is slipping. Check for leaks, have the fluid level and condition checked, and get the codes read before it gets worse.
At a glance
- Slipping: low or worn fluid, worn clutches, a solenoid or pressure problem
- Harsh or late shifts: fluid, a solenoid, a sensor or adaptive learning
- Shudder at low speed: often the torque converter clutch or the wrong fluid
- Red or brown puddle: a transmission or cooler line leak

Transmission Warning Signs
Slipping revs flare between gears or under acceleration.
Delayed engagement a pause before the car moves after selecting Drive or Reverse.
Harsh or late shifts clunks into gear or holds a gear too long.
Shudder a vibration like driving over rumble strips at low speed.
Whine or hum that changes with speed; CVTs can whine as they wear.
Warning light or limp mode a transmission light, check engine light or the car stuck in one gear.
Burning smell overheated fluid.
Leaks red, pink or brown fluid under the middle of the car.
Transmission Fluid: Check, Colour and Service
- Colour: fresh automatic fluid is usually bright red or pink. Dark brown fluid with a burnt smell is worn out.
- Level: many modern transmissions have no dipstick. The level is checked from a fill plug with the fluid at a set temperature, so it is a shop job.
- The right fluid: automatics, CVTs and dual-clutch transmissions each need their own approved fluid. A “universal” fluid is a common cause of shudder.
- Drain and fill or exchange: a drain and fill replaces part of the fluid; an exchange replaces more. We recommend the method your transmission and its condition call for.
- Adaptive learning: some transmissions need a relearn or software update after service so they shift smoothly.

- Check for leaks and updates cooler lines, seals and pan, plus any known software updates or service bulletins.
- Recommend honestly fluid service, a sensor or solenoid, a software update, or a rebuild or replacement when that is truly needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does transmission slipping feel like?
The engine revs climb but the car does not speed up to match, as if it briefly went into neutral. It is most noticeable accelerating from a stop, going up a hill or merging onto the highway.
Can low transmission fluid cause slipping?
Yes. Low fluid lets air into the pump, so pressure drops and the clutches slip. Low fluid also means there is a leak, which should be fixed along with topping up.
My transmission fluid is “lifetime”. Does it need changing?
Many manufacturers call the fluid lifetime under normal driving, but stop-and-go traffic, winter, towing and short trips count as severe service. On many cars a fluid service at the severe-service interval in the owner’s manual extends the life of the transmission.
Will changing old transmission fluid cause it to fail?
Fresh fluid does not damage a healthy transmission. On a transmission that is already slipping badly, a fluid change will not repair worn parts, so we test first and tell you honestly what to expect.
What is the difference between ATF and CVT fluid?
They are completely different. Automatic transmissions, CVTs and dual-clutch transmissions each need their own fluid, and often a specific brand-approved type. The wrong fluid causes shudder, slipping and damage.
Will having the work done at an independent shop affect my warranty?
No. Using an independent shop for maintenance and repairs does not void your new-vehicle warranty. Keep your invoices; we document the parts and work on every job.
