Ontario road salt keeps the roads clear and quietly eats cars from underneath. Cosmetic rust on a fender is annoying; rust on a brake line, fuel line, subframe or spring is a safety problem. Radman Auto Repair inspects cars for rust damage in Etobicoke and repairs the parts it affects.
Quick answer: have the underside inspected once a year, ideally in spring. Brake lines, fuel lines, subframes and springs matter far more than surface rust on the body.
At a glance
- Most critical: brake lines, fuel lines, subframes, suspension mounts, springs
- Also affected: A/C lines, exhaust, brake rotors and calipers, EVAP lines

Frequently Asked Questions
What rust problems are most dangerous?
Rusted brake lines, which can burst and cause a loss of braking, and rusted fuel lines, subframes, suspension mounts and coil springs. These are safety issues, not cosmetic ones.
How do I know if my brake lines are rusted?
You usually cannot see them without lifting the car. Heavy scale, flaking or swelling on the lines means they should be replaced. A soft or sinking pedal can mean one has already leaked.
Does rust proofing help?
Many drivers use annual rust-proofing from a specialist, and keeping salt off the underside helps. We do not offer rust proofing, but we inspect for rust damage and repair what it affects.
Can you repair a rusted subframe or frame?
It depends on the extent. Some parts can be replaced; severe structural rust can make a car uneconomical to repair. We show you what we find and give you honest options.
How often should my car be checked for rust?
Once a year, ideally in spring after salt season, and on any car older than about seven years at every service.
