Audi – One Minute Read

Audi logo Founded in 1909 by August Horch, Audi has its origins in Horch’s earlier automobile company.  The name “Audi” itself is a Latin translation of “Horch,” meaning “listen.”

The company’s first major success came with the Type A Sport-Phaeton in 1910.  Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Audi continued to build advanced cars, though it faced challenges during economic downturns and wartime.  The post-World War II era marked a significant turning point. In 1969, they merged with NSU, another German manufacturer known for its advanced engineering. This merger facilitated the development of new technologies and designs, including the 100 in 1968, which set new standards in automotive design and performance.

Audi in the 80s and Beyond

The 1980s marked another milestone introducing the Quattro. This car featured the revolutionary all-wheel-drive system, which greatly improved performance in all driving conditions.  This garnered international acclaim in the motorsport world, particularly in rally racing.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Audi continued to expand its range, introducing models that combined luxury, technology, and performance. Cars like the A4, A6, and A8 became synonymous with modern luxury.  The R8, introduced in 2006, showed their capabilities.

The 21st century has seen Audi increasingly focus on sustainability and innovation. The company has been at the forefront of developing electric and hybrid vehicles, like the e-tron series, showing commitment to environmentally-friendly technology while maintaining its hallmark luxury and performance.

The brand’s slogan, “Vorsprung durch Technik” (Advancement through Technology), is being well demonstrated in their cars.  Always developing new features and performance related improvements with each generation for their market leading vehicles.  They have followed a solid roadmap of evolution, while maintaining accessibility to each new customer generation.
