P0430 Catalyst Efficiency Bank 2 Diagnosis — Toronto & Etobicoke
P0430 means the catalytic converter on bank 2 of a V6 or V8 is not cleaning the exhaust as well as it should. A converter is expensive, so the cause, and whether the converter is really at fault, has to be proven first.

What P0430 Means
A catalytic converter stores and releases oxygen as it cleans the exhaust. The engine computer compares the oxygen sensor before the converter with the one after it. A healthy converter smooths the signal out; a worn one lets the downstream sensor mirror the upstream one.
P0430 is the bank 2 version of P0420. Engines with two exhaust banks usually have a converter for each, so P0430 points at the converter, sensors or exhaust on the side without cylinder 1.

P0430 Alone or With P0420?
Both P0420 and P0430: both converters are failing at once, which usually means something engine-wide damaged them: a history of misfires, an engine burning oil or coolant, or running rich for a long time. Fix that first or new converters will fail too.
P0430 only: look at bank 2 specifically: a past misfire on that side, an exhaust leak near the bank 2 sensors, a slow downstream oxygen sensor, or a converter that has simply aged.
Common Causes of P0430
Worn Converter
Converters lose efficiency with age and mileage, especially on high-kilometre V6 and V8 engines.
Misfire History
Unburned fuel from a bank 2 misfire overheats and damages the converter. See P0300 random misfire.
Exhaust Leak
A leak near the bank 2 downstream sensor lets outside air in and confuses the test.
Oxygen Sensor
A slow or failing downstream (sensor 2) oxygen sensor can make a good converter look bad.
Oil or Coolant Consumption
Burning oil or coolant coats the converter and poisons it.
Running Rich
Leaking injectors or a faulty sensor make the engine run rich and overload the converter.
How Radman Diagnoses P0430
We check for misfire counts and other codes first, then compare the upstream and downstream oxygen sensor signals on both banks. We test the downstream sensor’s response, look for exhaust leaks and measure the temperature across the converter, which should be hotter at the outlet when it is working.
Only when the sensors, leaks and engine causes are ruled out do we recommend a converter, and we tell you whether an aftermarket or original-equipment part is the better choice for your car. See also exhaust & catalytic converter repair.
