P0700 Transmission Control System Diagnosis — Toronto & Etobicoke

P0700 is a flag, not a diagnosis. It means the transmission computer has found a fault and stored its own code. Reading that second code is the first step to knowing what is actually wrong.

What P0700 Means

Most automatic transmissions are run by their own computer, the transmission control module (TCM), or by a section of the engine computer. When it detects a fault, it stores a detailed code and asks the engine computer to turn on the check engine light. The engine computer records that request as P0700.

A basic code reader may only show P0700. A scan tool that talks to the transmission computer shows the real code, such as a shift solenoid, a speed sensor, a pressure control fault or a gear ratio error. See our P0700–P0799 code list for what each one means.

This page is part of Radman’s check engine light diagnostic pages. The overview is at Check Engine Light Codes & Vehicle Diagnostics.

What Usually Sits Behind P0700

Shift and Pressure Solenoids

Electrically controlled valves that direct fluid for each shift; sticking or failed solenoids cause harsh, late or missing shifts.

Speed Sensors

Input and output speed sensors tell the computer what the transmission is doing; a failed one confuses shift timing.

Low or Worn Fluid

Low level or burnt fluid causes slipping and pressure faults that the computer flags.

Wiring and Connectors

Corroded or damaged wiring to the solenoids, sensors or valve body.

Low Battery Voltage

A weak battery or poor ground can make the transmission computer log faults.

Internal Wear

Worn clutches that cause gear ratio or slip codes, confirmed only after the simpler causes are ruled out.

Symptoms You May Notice

  • Harsh, late or erratic shifts
  • A flashing D, D4 or O/D OFF light on some makes
  • Limp mode: the car stays in one gear, often 2nd or 3rd, to protect the transmission
  • Slipping or flaring between gears
  • See transmission slipping & fluid service for how these feel.

How Radman Diagnoses P0700

We read the transmission computer’s own codes and freeze-frame data, check the fluid level and condition the right way for your transmission, and confirm battery voltage and grounds. Then we test the specific circuit or component named in the transmission code: solenoid resistance and operation, speed sensor signals, wiring and connectors.

We also check for software updates and service bulletins, which fix some shift complaints without parts. Only after that do we discuss a valve body, rebuild or replacement. Costs are covered on our transmission repair cost page.

P0700: read the transmission’s own code. Radman scans the transmission computer directly and tests the named fault. Call (416) 742-4521 or book online.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does P0700 mean?
P0700 means the transmission control system has detected a fault and stored its own, more specific code. P0700 itself only tells you to look at the transmission computer.
Why does my code reader only show P0700?
Many basic readers only read the engine computer. The detailed transmission code is stored in the transmission computer and needs a scan tool that can communicate with it.
Can I drive with P0700?
If the car shifts normally, carefully and for short distances. If it is stuck in one gear, slipping or shifting harshly, have it checked soon to avoid further damage.
Does P0700 mean my transmission is failing?
Not necessarily. Many P0700 faults are a solenoid, a sensor, wiring, low fluid or even low battery voltage, all far cheaper than a rebuild.
Can low transmission fluid set P0700?
Yes. Low or worn fluid causes pressure and slip faults that the transmission computer records, which turns on P0700.
