P0011 Camshaft Timing Over-Advanced Diagnosis — Toronto & Etobicoke

P0011 means the intake camshaft on bank 1 is more advanced than the engine computer asked for. Variable valve timing runs on engine oil, so the first suspect is often the oil itself.

What P0011 Means

Most modern engines use variable valve timing (VVT), also called VCT or VANOS depending on the maker. An oil control valve, a solenoid, sends pressurised engine oil to a cam phaser on the end of the camshaft, which rotates the cam to advance or retard valve timing as the engine needs.

P0011 means the actual position of the bank 1 intake camshaft is more advanced than the commanded position, or it is not following commands quickly enough. The engine computer sees the difference with the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors.

This page is part of Radman’s check engine light diagnostic pages. The overview is at Check Engine Light Codes & Vehicle Diagnostics.

Common Causes of P0011

Low or Dirty Oil

The most common cause. Low oil, sludge or the wrong viscosity changes the oil pressure and flow the VVT system depends on.

Oil Control Valve

A sticking VVT solenoid, or a clogged screen at its inlet, cannot control the oil sent to the phaser.

Cam Phaser

A worn or sticking phaser does not hold position; a brief rattle on cold start is a common sign.

Stretched Timing Chain

Chain stretch shifts the cam-to-crank relationship. It often also sets P0016 (crankshaft/camshaft correlation).

Wiring or Sensor

A damaged connector or wire to the oil control valve, or a faulty camshaft position sensor.

Symptoms You May Notice

  • Rough idle or stalling, especially when warm
  • Hesitation, reduced power or poor fuel economy
  • A rattle for a second or two on cold start
  • Hard starting
  • Sometimes no symptoms beyond the check engine light

How Radman Diagnoses P0011

We check the oil level and condition first and confirm the right oil is in the engine. If the oil is low, dirty or wrong, an oil change with the correct oil and a cleared code is the first step; on many cars that alone fixes it. See synthetic oil change.

If the code returns, we command the cam timing with a scan tool and watch the desired and actual positions, test the oil control valve and its screen, check the wiring and cam sensor, and check cam-to-crank correlation for timing chain stretch before recommending a phaser or chain job.

P0011: oil first, then the VVT system. Radman checks the simple causes before the expensive ones. Call (416) 742-4521 or book online.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does P0011 mean?
P0011 means the intake camshaft on bank 1 is more advanced than the engine computer commanded. The variable valve timing system is not placing the cam where it should.
Can low oil cause P0011?
Yes, and it is the most common cause. The variable valve timing system is operated by engine oil, so low, dirty or incorrect oil can stop it from working properly.
Can I drive with P0011?
For a short time if the car runs normally, but check the oil level right away. If it idles rough, stalls or rattles, have it checked soon; ignoring timing problems can lead to expensive engine damage.
What is the difference between P0011 and P0016?
P0011 means the cam is more advanced than commanded. P0016 means the cam and crank positions do not correlate, which often points to a stretched timing chain or a slipped tooth. They frequently appear together.
Will an oil change fix P0011?
On many cars, if the oil was low, dirty or the wrong grade. If the code returns after a correct oil change, the oil control valve, phaser or timing chain needs testing.
