P0174 System Too Lean Bank 2 Diagnosis — Toronto & Etobicoke

P0174 means the engine computer is adding as much fuel as it is allowed to on bank 2 and the mixture is still lean. Whether it appears alone or together with P0171 points the diagnosis in very different directions.

What P0174 Means

The engine computer constantly adjusts how much fuel it injects, using the oxygen sensors to keep the air-fuel mixture correct. These adjustments are called fuel trims. When it has to add more fuel than its limit and the exhaust still reads lean, it sets a lean code.

Bank 2 is the side of a V6 or V8 engine that does not contain cylinder number 1. P0174 means bank 2 is lean; P0171 is the same code for bank 1. Four-cylinder engines have only bank 1, so they set P0171, never P0174.

P0174 Alone or With P0171?

Both P0171 and P0174: something affects the whole engine. Common causes are a vacuum leak in a shared part of the intake (PCV hose, intake boot, brake booster hose), a dirty or failing MAF sensor reading less air than is coming in, or low fuel pressure from a weak pump or clogged filter.

P0174 only: the problem is on bank 2 alone. Look at the intake manifold gasket on that side, a clogged or leaking injector on bank 2, an exhaust leak ahead of the bank 2 oxygen sensor that pulls in outside air, or the sensor itself.

Common Causes of P0174

Vacuum Leaks

Cracked PCV or vacuum hoses, a leaking intake gasket or a split intake boot let in air the MAF never measured. Lean codes from vacuum leaks are usually worst at idle.

MAF Sensor

A contaminated or failing mass air flow sensor under-reports air, so the engine injects too little fuel. See P0101 MAF sensor.

Fuel Pressure

A weak fuel pump, a clogged filter or a faulty regulator starves both banks, especially under load.

Bank 2 Injectors

Clogged or sticking injectors on bank 2 deliver less fuel than commanded.

Exhaust Leak

A leak ahead of the bank 2 upstream oxygen sensor draws in air and makes the sensor read lean even when the mixture is fine.

Oxygen Sensor

A slow or biased bank 2 sensor, usually the last thing to suspect after the others are ruled out.

How Radman Diagnoses P0174

We read the fuel trims at idle and at 2,500 rpm on both banks. Trims that are high at idle and improve with rpm point to a vacuum leak; trims that get worse under load point to fuel delivery or the MAF sensor. Comparing bank 1 and bank 2 shows whether the cause is shared or bank-specific.

Then we confirm it: a smoke test of the intake for vacuum leaks, a fuel pressure test, MAF readings checked against what the engine should be drawing, and injector and exhaust leak checks on bank 2.

P0174: trims first, then test. Radman uses fuel trim data and smoke testing to find the lean cause before replacing parts. Call (416) 742-4521 or book online.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does P0174 mean?
P0174 means the engine computer has reached its limit adding fuel on bank 2 of a V6 or V8 engine and the oxygen sensor still reads lean. Too much air or too little fuel is reaching that side of the engine.
What is bank 2?
On a V-shaped engine, bank 2 is the row of cylinders that does not contain cylinder number 1. Your engine’s service information shows which side that is.
What does it mean when P0171 and P0174 appear together?
Both banks are lean, so the cause is usually shared: a vacuum leak in the common intake, a dirty or failing MAF sensor, or low fuel pressure.
Can I drive with P0174?
Usually for a short time, but a lean engine runs hotter, can misfire and can damage the catalytic converters over time. Have it diagnosed soon.
Will cleaning the MAF sensor fix P0174?
Sometimes, if the sensor is contaminated. If the trims stay high after cleaning with a proper MAF cleaner, the cause is elsewhere, often a vacuum leak or fuel pressure.
