P0442 & P0456 Small EVAP Leak Diagnosis — Toronto & Etobicoke
P0442 and P0456 mean the EVAP system found a small or very small leak. The leak can be as small as a pinhole, which is why these codes keep coming back after a new gas cap. Finding it takes a smoke test, not guesswork.

What P0442 and P0456 Mean
The evaporative emissions (EVAP) system stores fuel vapour from the tank in a charcoal canister and later lets the engine burn it. The system is sealed, and the engine computer regularly tests that seal by closing it off and watching whether pressure or vacuum holds.
P0442 means a small leak was detected, roughly the size of a 1 mm (0.040 in) hole. P0456 means a very small leak, about 0.5 mm (0.020 in). Both are smaller than the leak behind P0455 (large leak), so they are harder to see and rarely cause any driving symptoms. The car runs normally; the check engine light is the only sign.

What Causes a Small EVAP Leak
Gas Cap Seal
A worn, hardened or cracked cap gasket that looks fine but no longer seals perfectly. Aftermarket caps that do not match the filler neck are a common cause of recurring small-leak codes.
Filler Neck
Rust on the metal lip where the cap seals, or a hairline crack in a plastic filler neck, leaves a gap no bigger than a pinhole.
EVAP Hoses and Fittings
Small cracks at bends, fittings and clamps in the vapour lines under the car, worsened by Ontario road salt and freeze-thaw cycles.
Purge Valve
A purge valve that seeps slightly across its seat when it should be closed lets the test pressure leak into the intake.
Vent Valve
The valve that seals the canister during the test can stick slightly open or seal poorly, especially when dirt or spiders get into its filter.
Canister and Leak-Detection Pump
A hairline crack in the canister, or a fault in the leak-detection pump or module some makes use to run the test.
Why Small Leaks Are Hard to Find
A large leak is often visible; a small one is not. Many cars only run the small-leak test under specific conditions, such as after the car has sat for several hours, with the fuel tank neither nearly empty nor full. That is why the light can take days to come back after it is cleared, and why clearing the code proves nothing.
A smoke test fills the EVAP system with harmless, visible vapour at low pressure. Smoke escaping from a hose, seam or seal shows exactly where the leak is, even when it is a pinhole.
How Radman Diagnoses P0442 and P0456
We start with the cap and filler neck, because they are the most common and cheapest causes. Next, the purge and vent valves are commanded with a scan tool and checked for sealing. Then the whole system is smoke tested, from the filler neck back through the hoses, canister and valves, until the leak is found.
Many small-leak codes trace back to the same parts as the long cranking after a fill-up described in our Acura EVAP guide.
